“If the gut is off and the body is inflamed, no amount of surface-level beauty tricks are going to make you look or feel good enough.”

As you may know, I’ve decided to start 2019 by reading GOOP Clean Beauty by Gwyneth Paltrow. This book is filled with so much insight and brought a lot of light into what I already knew about detoxing and I hope it does the same for you. Everything on this post comes from the book.  Of course, you can get way more in depth information and the science behind it all if you read the book but these are pretty much the bullet points.

Our own bodies are already capable of detoxing on their own and they do so constantly. BUT, since the world is filled with so many toxins and chemicals, are bodies go into overdrive and spend way to much time detoxing when that energy can be spend on things like giving your skin a healthy glow. There are certain things you can do to help it speed the process along and help decrease the load.

Your body is filled with toxins from the environment, plastic, food, makeup, hand soaps, laundry detergent, non stick pans, even mattresses we sleep on. We can even absorb toxins through our skins. When your body is filled with all these toxins, it shows greatly on your skin by stealing the skins glow through inflamed skin or indigestion. Having your body filled with all these toxins and chemicals have also been linked to almost every health issue out there.

  1. Drink a lot of water- By drinking water, you’re helping your liver and kidneys flush out any toxins.

  2. Sweat as mush as possible- (Exercise, Infrared Saunas) Exercise is amazing for so many reasons and detoxing is one of them. Exercising speeds detox by burning fat, therefore releasing all the lipophilic toxins. If you don’t have access to an infrared sauna, a traditional sauna will also do the trick.

  3. Burn fat and avoid animal fat- Animals store toxins in their fat called lipophilic, (lipophilic are fat loving toxins.) Therefore when you eat animal fat, you are eating all the toxins they themselves were storing.

  4. Limit your exposure to toxins- Buy glass containers, BPA free, avoid processed foods, safe home products as in Mrs. Meyers.

  5. Eat Clean- There is really no science behind why eating clean is on here. The purer you eat, the less toxins you consume. Try eating organic vegetables, fruits, grains.

  6. Dry Brushing- I was skeptical about dry brushing before I read about it in GOOP. Now I’m rushing to their website to buy some of the brushes and give it a try. The surface of the skin can also get blocked and cause congestion. “Dry brushing stimulates lymphatic drainage, moving nutrients from the blood into the cells and removing the toxins.” It helps get rid of all the dead skin and give your body that healthy glow we all seek for. Don’t ever dry brush your face though. If you’re interested in how to dry brush, (there is a technique) let me know down in the comments section and I will create another blog post about dry brushing.

  7. Yoga- “Yoga is a practice that was designed explicitly to address, strengthen, and purify all three bodies: Through postures and clean eating we purify the physical body; through breathing, meditation, and chanting we purify the subtle body; and through service and thinking of others first we purify the body of bliss.”

And these are all the things you can do to speed up your natural detox. Juice cleanses are not recommended, they are filled up with too much sugar and its better to stick with a clean eating lifestyle. Of course clean eating isn’t easy to achieve. You can start by introducing at least one healthy meal a day and work your way up from there.

Wellness is a topic I’m very passionate about and hope to shed as much light as I can in this area on my blog. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to leave a comment below.
