SELFCARE THAT DOESN’T INVOLVE SPENDING MONEY

We’re all about the skincare hype now: face masks, chemical peels, creams, toners, scrubs, eye patches, lip masks and honestly I can go on and on but you get it. Although all these things are, let’s face it, irresistible to any girl, I mean face masks, count me in! BUT, we don’t have to spend money to practice self care in our daily lives. “Self care” has been turned into a trend by industries that want to make money with their self care products and hashtags. 

Self care is more about how we feel and how we take care of ourselves. It’s about tuning in with ourselves and nourishing our bodies. It’s about knowing when to take a break and when enough is enough. Yes, taking care of yourself also involves taking care of your skin, but that doesn't necessarily mean running to Sephora and buying all the products you can get your hands on. How you look on the outside is an indicator of what you put inside your body and how you’re nourishing it. No amout of skin care products will ever work if you keep eating greasy foods and skipping out on water. No amount of vacations will keep you from stressing out if you don’t know how to relax. Instead of buying collagen this or that, exercise to decrease signs of aging and keep your skin radiant. There are so many things you can practice before running out and buying anything.

Drink water. Instead of buying things that are labeled detox, try drinking lemon water first thing in the morning. Your body detoxes itself while you’re sleeping, when you wake up and drink lemon water, you’re giving your body an extra hand in eliminating those toxins. Also, drink at least 2 liters of water throughout your day; it clears your skin from any acne and obviously keeps you hydrated. In my case, it gives me a natural glow.

Meditate 10 minutes every morning. Do you get frustrated/angry easily? Does everything annoy you? Constantly bitter, stressed, short attention spam, snappy, high blood pressure, trouble sleeping? Meditating helps with ALL of this and more. Instead of drinking pills, drinking to destress, or doing anything else that requires spending money, try meditating 10 minutes every morning. I started meditating last year and it’s honestly made such a difference in my life.

Exercise gives you energy, fights signs of aging, helps you sleep better at night, produces endorphins, helps with memory, is good for your muscles and bones, helps with weight loss, promotes a better sex life. I think I've said enough.

Read a book. Reading is so relaxing for me and I choose it over watching a movie. I love getting sucked into a good book. I guess only book worms can relate with me on this one.

Turn off your phone. Sometimes you need to turn off your phone and spend some time alone. Take this time to do something you love or spend some time with your family.

Learn to say NO. I honestly have no problem saying no and it’s so liberating. My husband on the other hand, hates saying no and always agrees to things he doesn’t even want to do. If you don’t want to go, just say “no”. I understand the “not wanting to hurt anyone’s feelings”, but overbooking yourself is your fault and no one else’s. You choose what you want to do with your time.

Yoga. Wether you’re a big skeptical or you think it isn’t for you, don’t knock it till you try it. Yoga relaxes and works every muscle in your body. Take some time from your hectic day and tune in.

Eat veggies & fruits. I don’t think I have to remind anyone about all the benefits that veggies and fruits have. Eat well, feel great.

Breathe. Wether I’m driving, about to loose my sh**, stuck in traffic, stressed. I step back and I take deep breathes. Take at least 10 deep breathes, inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth to alleviate anxiety and stress.

Dance like no one is watching. Ok, I can’t be the only one that does this. Sometimes when I’m home alone i’ll put on my favorite song and throw myself a little concert.

Go for a walk. Take this time to reflect, look at your surroundings and breathe in real air. I guess this also counts as exercise, right?

Quit self negative-talk. The only one holding you back from doing something you love is yourself. Stop saying you can’t, stop saying it’s hard, stop saying it’s impossible, just do it. Treat yourself better and say to yourself, I am capable, I am beautiful, I am smart, I am kind, I am strong, I can do it!

Redecorate. I am constantly moving furnish and decor around the house. You don’t always need to buy new things to update your home. I always end up feeling better and liking the new vibe I’ve created.

Sleep. Your body NEEDS sleep to flush toxins, reduce stress, loose weight, reduce inflammation, and repair the body. If you’re planning an all nighter please think again and get some sleep. Skipping out on sleep weakens your immune system, your memory gets impaired, you end up not looking your best, and say goodbye to replacing your aging/dead cells.

Bubble Bath. You don’t need all the fancy detox bath bombs or rose petals. Just get in the tub with a book, a cup of tea or glass of wine, and just unwind.

Self-care is taking time for yourself and it’s different for everyone. I practice self-care by meditating, exercising, taking care of my skin, drinking my vitamins, saying no and being selfish with my time. Comment below on what you do to practice self-care.
